Why shouldn't DC get statehood? Congress could still carve out the national mall as the legal "capital".

Why should they and not the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Puerto Rico?

Not sure how you got to Pelosi.
In politics, when there is hypocrisy it is many times on both sides. In this case what did the Democrats try doing in 2016? And what did they say then in regards to nominating a SCJ in Obama's last year?

"I want you to use my words against me. If there's a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said let's let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination."

“After the treatment of Justice Kavanaugh I now have a different view of the judicial-confirmation process,” Graham said.

My house has officially succeeded from New Jersey, and I have declared it to be North South South South North North South South Central Jersey. I am lowering taxes in my state, and I have formed allegiances with  South South South South North North South South Central Jersey and South North South South North North South South Central Jersey.

And now you have two senators and a congressman to represent you. Congratulations!

Maybe they should, but I think it would make more sense for the DC municipality to be part of one of the surrounding states. There are many other areas in the country which make more sense to be separated that to have DC as its own state.

“Now that it’s actually happened, I obviously have no choice but to invent a reason why it’s not hypocritical to pretend this foot isn’t stuck deeply in my mouth”

Feel free to apply this to every politician who voiced an opinion on Garland.

Hilarious how

1- Republicans absolutely definitely cannot admit that it is 100% hypocritical beyond belief.

@YitzyS - Nice n”m but Graham literally spelled out how 2020 would be the exact same in his opinion.

2- Just like it is completely and obviously false to claim that Democrats wouldn’t do the same exact thing with the shoe on the other foot.

@biscotti - 2016 wasn’t the ultimate precedent. There were many previous instances of similar nominations/votes.

Just to be clear, are you admitting it’s completely hypocritical? Or are your glasses clouding your view?

We’re not discussing those politicians. This is another example of “but officer”

ETA: Also, to argue this point- its great that they argued that way in 2016, but the Republicans actually made their argument happen. They won. Now Dems can point to it as established precedent. That certainly should play at least some role in how it should be viewed now- the way it was handled last time. Republicans can do no such thing here.

The democrats are also taking the exact opposite position from the one they took and revisiting their position from 1992.
