Is it a given that with EU citizenship you can travel freely within the EU? No quarantine?

Another aspect that nobody seems to mention is that with dual citizenship you lose a certain degree of protection that your US citizenship offers. You will be regarded as a local with its pluses and minuses. You will be subject to laws that you may not be aware of.

Wouldn’t you get drafted as a US citizenship whether you’re also citizen of another country or not?

And AFAIK as a US taxpayer you’re liable for US taxes on foreign assets/income regardless of whether you’re a foreign citizen or not.

If you get a Latvian citizenship and they have a draft (which can change) you will be required to serve in the Latvian army. If Russia decides to invade good luck to you. If Latvia decides to tax out-of-country income, you will have to pay taxes. If they have a local law that you cannot wear a scarf on Shabbos and you violate that rule you will have a legal issue.
If you shrug your shoulder, what do you care about Latvia but you are flying from NYC to TLV with a transfer in AMS, the EU can grab you in AMS because in their system it will show that a member state has a claim against you.

If someone has a "weaker" passport and you have a reason why you need an EU passport, go for it. I am simply pointing out some risks that people don't think about when they decide to get another passport because it's cool. In some situations it can help you, in others quite the opposite.

I don’t think it’s happening so soon that such laws will be on the books for non-resident ancestral citizens of countries discussed in this thread that will cause an EU arrest warrant out for someone in that situation.

Can it happen? Perhaps. But it sounds far fetched to me. Your risk aversion might vary.

I am not aware of such a category. You are either a citizen or not. Citizenship gives you rights and obligations. The obligations exist even if you are not aware of them and you don't speak the language.

The ancestral part isn’t a category, but the non-resident thing often is. And with it being ancestrally inherited citizenship where the person never lived in the country, doesn’t speak the language, etc, it adds a measure of deniability. It doesn’t necessarily get one off the hook, but unless they’re unduly vindictive all of those factors might be considered.

Is it a concern? Maybe, but a lot of people doing this won’t bat an eyelid even when confronted with this theoretical risk.

Personally I’d accept citizenship from any EU country (probably any EEA country too) tomorrow without hesitation.
