You asked someone delivered.... even before you asked...

There used to be a long time ago ChatSID (developed by the Livigent filer developers), it's not on the Play Store anymore but here is the APK https://www.dropbox.com/s/xvn9fvm1ecq2r3j/ChatSID_v2.1.apk?dl=0

More recently there is Teleteens (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ori.telegram.app&gl=IL) which has quite a cool system of restrictions setup.
What is the price for those 2? I would love to have filtered Telegram.

(which uses your space on your hard drive)

Whatsapp also backs up to your phone (if you have it set up to back up to Google drive, that is in addition). They also keep 7 days of backups which add up to a lot of storage space

True but you can delete them and it will still be backed up.

Right but it's still annoying. My phone storage is almost full, so every couple of days I'm deleting a GB+ of redundant backups.

WhatsApp has a status feature which I don't believe signal or Telegram have (it as well isn't E2E).

I read somewhere that Singnal status updates will be released on Feb. 3, not sure of the source though.

Should we go in circles? Let the end user decide what they like better free or paid, it cost money after a year but provides different filtering options then the others

*Yo ssi's Take*
In short what's going on: WhatsApp has updated their policies to allow them to share information with 3rd parties which can include advertisers etc.. while they won't be sharing your actual messages, they may share your phone number, app logs, status messages, profile name, profile picture, IP address and all transactions in their payment option they have in the works. Basically anything not E2E encrypted (see below).

Should you be worried?
Yes and no, depending on your level of comfort. I'd assume most facebook users are already having a significant amount of data shared.

Why are people moving?
Mostly because of the way WhatsApp is being run under facebook and where it may lead. It's definitely a good platform to be moving away from.

What is end to end (E2E) encryption?
It's a secure way to send messages without it being passed through or stored by a 3rd party. Something which isn't E2E encrypted your giving the option for the 3rd party's server to be compromised, and a potential point of entry, not to mention the 3rd party can access your data (WhatsApp messages calls and video calls are E2E encrypted). That's the reason at times you couldn't download that picture from a group because the picture has to be physically on the phone of the sender and isn't stored on the cloud.

WhatsApp E2E is worse than unencrypted chats because itís deceiving. If you ever back up your chats, itís unencrypted messages. And not just you, but if the other end of the conversation backs up their chats, itís also unencrypted. And since itís given that basically everyone backs up their chats, nothing is actually private on WhatsApp. But who would expect otherwise?

Welcome to the world:)
To be fare, while your backups aren't E2E, they should still be encrypted by Google (or Apple).
It's a big mistake. The opposite of E2E isn't not encrypted (rather it's up to the security of the 3rd party)

The 3rd party can secure it with the cryptographic version of Fort Knox. Itís all meaningless when the NSA/FBI comes knocking with a (rubber stamped) warrant, they hand over the keys. Iím also unsure if the backup transfer process is encrypted as well (it probably isnít).

Is that really what your worried about?
I'm not familiar with the process, but I'd assume it's as secure as uploading anything to GDrive, HTTPS encrypted.

Just read a little more, the biggest issue is storing data on Googleís servers. Any warrant can get them to hand everything over. The data might be encrypted but they have the key to access it.
