For those who want to churn and/or want to get the bonus without paying the annual fee: Wait until the A/F gets charged, pay it off with the rest of the bill, and the sign-up bonus will post (at the end of that billing cycle). Then call to close the account and ask to be refunded. They can't charge an A/F for a card you aren't using. You will not lose the miles once they are in your US Airways account.

It seems that if after you use the card you just let it sit unused for a couple months, they will then email you with a targeted offer for 15,000 more points for spending $750 a month for three months.

DATA POINT:

I opened my first Barclay card in December for the Miles & More promo back then. I still have the Miles & More opened. I applied yesterday for the US Air and the Miles and More card. US Air was instantly approved. Miles & More went to recon. I called today and told them I wanted to use the 2nd card for business related expenses and they approved me after thoroughly looking over my credit report which was clean.

Close the arrival and then apply
Why?

Palestinians ≠ Hamas
Satmar ≠ SatmarHQ

I am impressed. This is NOT the norm. This is Dan-like luck with Barclays.

WOW. 2BM success AND having the previous LH open! Impressive. Did you end up closing the original LH?

Keeping it for now, I am still waiting for some points to come in. Will close it later.
The CSR made it very painless as well.

Wow, great for you. I just closed my LH today so I can go for it again in week. Maybe I should have taken the risk you took. :)

UPDATE: Barclays refused to match my US Airways card that I opened last week to the 40,000 offer. HUCA here I come!

May want to try a different variety of card - just got auto declined on a US Air card as I had closed one 3 weeks previously.  As per usual with Barclays I was unable to talk my way into an approval from there.

Interesting. In the LH thread, people are saying 1 week was enough of a wait.

40K points after spending $1 with an $89 fee. Is this a good card to get?

Does that mean you must pay the $89 to get the 40k? And if so, can you cancel the card a month later and get the $89 refunded and keep the 40k?

Yes you pay the fee. But you could try to waive it through SM, or cancel after points post.

To get the 5,000 mile discount for having the cc, do i need to use it or is just having it good enough?
You may not hold me responsible for any actions taken that were recommended from my account or username.

IME just having it is enough, as long as you are logged onto your card member account.
