For those who want to churn and/or want to get the bonus without paying the annual fee: Wait until the A/F gets charged, pay it off with the rest of the bill, and the sign-up bonus will post (at the end of that billing cycle). Then call to close the account and ask to be refunded. They can't charge an A/F for a card you aren't using. You will not lose the miles once they are in your US Airways account.

It seems that if after you use the card you just let it sit unused for a couple months, they will then email you with a targeted offer for 15,000 more points for spending $750 a month for three months.

It look like you wrote you sent a check to pay for the annual fee. You meant check was sent back to you refunded?
Where have you heard of people sending checks to pay their AF?
Yes. It's a refund.

I want to apply for another. If my total credit with them is low, chances are, I'll be automatically approved.
Normally, I would downgrade and then close, but I don't know how long this card will be around for.

I just downgraded my card.  Not sure how long to wait until I should apply for the new one.

Neither am I. Last time I waited 5 days and was instantly approved. Can't know for sure though.

Yes. After speaking with the rep.
It takes more than 2 days to see it online.

By the time you applied,  had it converted online?

Yes. Thats what I waited for.
BTW: I was on the phone with them 2-3 days after the downgrade and the rep didn't seem to know that I downgraded. He just saw an Arrival. Even though the old card was still showing online.
He had to look through the notes to confirm that it was a downgrade.

So if I have a big CL, should I ask them to lower my CL, before I apply for another card?

Can you apply for a second card within 30 days of getting the first card?

Yes.

Even without cancelling or downgrading the first one?

Hard to know. I lowered my total credit with them to 1 card, $500 CL. But it's probably non necessary.
Lower it to as much as you feel comfortable with and hope for the best. Be prepared for recon.
