Best soft keyboard iOS (or Android)?
« on: September 25, 2020, 12:02:47 PM »
I've been a SwiftKey fan for many years. I've used it when I was on Android, and was happy when it became available on iOS. I've found it's predictions and many other features (the option for a separate numbers row on top) very good and productivity-boosting.

The biggest problem I've had with it (which is probably more of a Google/Gmail problem) is what happens when I try to search in the Gmail app. Somehow Google's predictions and autocompletion don't live well with SwiftKey. It literally drives me crazy.

I am also multilingual, on Android SwiftKey could have several languages installed and switching between them is easy. On iOS it's limited to only two languages, so I have Yiddish and English defined.

When Gboard originally came out, I wanted to try it, but it didn't have Hebrew or Yiddish at the time, so I dropped it, but I recently decided to try it out.

Gboard advantages:

1. Definitely coexists better (though not perfect) with Google predictions/autocomplete in the Gmail app search.
2. Can have 3 languages installed on iPhone.
3. Smart predictions (will come up with emojis by typing a term, will do calculations, etc).

Gboard disadvantages:
1. Won't remember/autocomplete email addresses, web addressed etc.  (this seems to be a game changer for me, and I'm ditching Gboard over this for now).
2. Doesn't handle spaces as well (for example, if I type a word, and it's autocompleted predicted in the singular form, if I want to make it plural it's not a smooth process).

What is your favorite soft keyboard? What are the best and worst features?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

1. Works perfectly fine for me.
2. I'm not sure what's not smooth about the process, the suggestions on top are the most accurate out of any keyboard I've tried!

An added bonus for iPhone is the ability to enable haptics.

ETA
To be more specific, for email addresses it saves them. As for web addresses my browser saves them, I think it would be annoying if it did.

Not if you're constantly typing a web address in WhatsApp or email messages, referring people to a website, and that website address is a conjugated phrase with a number within it (such at go2heaven.edu for example), Gboard simply won't handle that well.

Gboard has an amazingly useful clipboard on board (pun alert!), that combined with chrome's one tap copy is a game changer. You'll find it faster to having to type anything at all.

You'll need to show me in person what you mean. I also don't use Chrome on my iPhone. Only Safari and Opera.

Also I find switching languages on Switfkey faster and more convenient (even if I stick to only two languages).

And actually, the straw that broke the camel's back for me in switching back to SwiftKey was the most recent software update for Gboard which resulted in non-Latin alphabet keyboards to not display/work properly at all (a phone restart might have helped, IDK. Removing and reinstalling languages did not!). I live a multilingual life and communicate constantly in several languages (though I had some other keyboards installed for fun for the odd time I might want to type something in a different alphabet, rather than using Google Translate in order to get the word typed), I need the ability to switch easily and effectively.

I don't daily drive an iPhone, I can confidently say in Android it's unbeatable. Switching the language is just a tap.

I find a swipe (Swiftkey) for switching languages faster/more intuitive/doesn't require an extra "key". I haven't been on Android for years, though DW is on a Pixel (is the default keyboard there Gboard?)

Indeed it is.
What matters most to me in a keyboard is simply my typing speed. I'll take any keyboard type away at it, see how good it is at correcting my spelling, then I'll see which is better with swiping. I honestly don't think anything comes even close to Gboard.
About remembering website names, it might actually remember them if you type them out fully, I just haven't really typed a full website name in years thanks to chrome   :)

Upon further inspection Gboard on iPhone is considerably worse than it's Android equivalent, I'll assume for no fault other than of Apple.
One of the great features of note which is missing, swiping right on the backspace to delete the last word or words. (As well as no number row and harder to switch languages)

RIP SwiftKey for iOS. Was far from perfect under iOS, but recently became totally unusable (and I just discovered that Microsoft has decided to deprecate it).

What a good alternative? (I might just go with the built-in iOS keyboard with voice recognition).

Maybe give Gboard another chance?

Just reinstalled. Will look into it. Do they have Hebrew/Yiddish?

Both (at least on Android, but I'd think the language list is the same.)

Nothing beats Gboards accuracy
The swipe on backspace is also a game changer especially for URLs

I've been using Gboard and was missing SwiftKey (which I uninstalled when it became unusable), until yesterday it showed up with an updated version on the App store. I updated (installed) and it's working beautifully. Even working in Gmail app which never worked before.

SwiftKey English.

SwiftKey Yiddish

SwiftKey Numeric/Symbol

SwiftKey example of long press to bring up more options per key iOS doesn't even seem to have punctuation without switching to Numeric/Symbol

Switching languages (only 2) is as easy as spacebar swipe right or left.

iOS English.

iOS Hebrew

iOS Numeric/Symbol 1

iOS Numeric/Symbol 2
