Here's a mystery story, can anyone solve this?

A few years ago my friend ordered an EZ pass tag, once it arrived he activated an account, added his plates and a credit card with auto pay.

After using it multiple time he noticed nothing is being charged, when he checked his online account there was no record of any crossings.

His brother was passing the GWB daily so they made a deal and swapped tags... the brother used it for 2 years almost daily for a cost of 0.00, after about two years one day he passes the booth and was stopped by an attendant who told him we need your tag as "there's an alert on it"

IME a website is a pretty good indicator of the underlying technology of the product. It looks like they set something up and barely maintain it. It isn't shocking some bug went undetected for who knows how many years. I guess by EZPass we don't hold by the Chofetz Chaim ripping up a stamp story
