What are your shuls plans for Simchas Torah?

As we approach Shmini Atzeres and Simchas Torah, our usual joy is tempered by concern and confusion. We make plans, with the usual optimism of our People.

Please read through this entire email. A few important points:

Safety – We must continue to wear masks (covering the mouth and nose), wash hands and practice social distancing. This is especially important when entering or exiting the building and during all services and anytime you are in proximity to other people. If you have a cold or don’t feel well, stay away.

Respect – WE SHOW RESPECT FOR THE NYPD. We have an excellent relationship with the local Police and wish to keep it that way. If any law enforcement people enter the building, please be respectful. Direct all questions to the Rov or Gabboim.

Media – Our policy is that any and all members of the media must remain outside of the Shul building. In the event that they arrive in Shul, politely tell them that they must leave. Please do not answer their questions. They are not our friends and we must suspect that they are looking to present us in a bad light.

SHABBOS SHMINI ATZERES
Friday night – It is with a heavy heart, that we ask women not to come to Shul for the evening minyanim on either night. Maariv minyanim cannot be staggered and we therefore need the Ezras Nashim for the men. There will be simultaneous minyanim for Mincha/Maariv in the Shul, Simcha Hall and Courtyard. Those who do not have the custom of Shmini Atzeres Hakafos are asked to daven downstairs, where there will be no hakafos on Friday evening.

Shacharis minyanim will take place at 7:15 & 8:30.  An additional Yizkor Service for those who prefer not to come in the morning, will take place in the Sukkah, led by the Rov, at 4:30. There will be sections for men and women. The complete Siyum Mishnayos Yizkor will be recited at that time.

SIMCHAS TORAH
With great sadness, we recognize the urgent need to seriously modify the Simchas Torah schedule. It is painful to think of a Simchas Torah without the joy of celebrating with the Torah. We ask that you participate in the communal nigunim and singing, at your seats, so that we can feel the Simchas HaChag.

Hakafos – We will sing nigunim in place, while an individual takes the Sefer Torah around the Bima. Wherever possible, this honor will be given to families with multiple members in Shul, so that multiple Sifrei Torah can be honored at the same hakafah. Please respect the Gabbai’s discretion in giving out these kibbudim.

Shachris Minyanim – at 7:15 & 8:30

Aliyos – At the 7:15 minyan all attendees will receive their aliyos downstairs. At the 8:30 minyan, during each hakafah, the Gabbai will designate 10 people to go to the Simcha Hall for Aliyos. Only the one round of purchased Aliyos will take place in the main Beis Medrash. There will be no Kiddush.

Children –We regret that we cannot accommodate children below the age of 12 in Shul this year.

Siyum Mishnayos - In honor of the Siyum Mishnayos, the siyum will be recited in Shul after Mincha. Packaged snacks will be distributed for individuals to participate in the Siyum at their seats.

To have a meaningful Chag, we each need to put greater focus on our davening. The Shema Yisroel and subsequent pesukim that are usually recited flippantly at the beginning of each hakafah, can now be said with greater feeling.

LET’S DO IT – Let’s make this an inspiring Simchas Torah, despite the restrictions. While we will not be dancing, we can still celebrate with our voices, smiles and with our hearts.
