2nd hand car : Craigslist vs Rental car sales
« on: December 05, 2011, 12:35:53 PM »
Looking for Ford Edge '08-'10
Which one is the lesser of the 2 evils?
Craigslist:
Pros: Owned by a private person who most likely didn't abuse the car.
Possible to get a really good car for a very below market price if the seller is desperate to sell.
Cons: Reason for selling the car is probably that it has problems that it wasn't worth the dealer to take it back. Why else would some someone buy a brand new car lose 5-10k on it then sell it on CL?
Rental Car Sale:
Pros: Your getting a car which has been looked after, serviced and maintained properly.
Usually you get a warranty of some sort
Cons: Your paying close to full price (KBB price)
Renters dont usually care too much about the cars they rent...

I would disagree with that. Dealers would never pay as much as the consumer would. How else would they be able to make a profit on it.
Ive gotten some great deals on CL. The reason they sell it on CL is 100% not because the dealer wouldnt take it. Its because they can make more on it.

The one car i would never buy is a rental car. But thats just me.

Right I definitely hear that dealers pay less. But why wouldn't he do a trade in....
As far as looking in CL should I only look for cars 'by owner' or by dealer as  well..

Try looking into certified pre-owned cars from an official dealer. This time of the year you can sometimes find great deals, IME. Dealers often need to push cars before the end of the year. You do need to know how to negotiate with them. Shop around, never go to just one dealer and never, ever buy it the first time etc. I always walked out the first time. Even if it was a good deal. Two years ago I closed a sale on December 29 on a '09 sonata with less than 4K miles. I was negotiating with them for over a month. Be patience.

Dealers give very little back on the trade in

I usually only search by owner, as if you add in by dealer you get all the dealer adds, which the prices often aren't real

I usually search by both and have gotten a good deal at a dealer found via CL.
Also, depending on the state, you will pay alot more in sales tax if you buy from a dealer over a private party

What's the difference between looking up sales in the "car and truck magazine" and going on CL and seeing it there?

you can also try Ebay Motors and search for cars in your area. there are both private and dealer listings there.

I bought my parents a Nissan altima on 12/31/2009 it was used by the dealership owner had 800 miles on it and it was 18,300 out the door (after all taxes and charges) so really like 16,500. there are always deals. look in the paper and see what the ad prices are. Also second hand cars could be cheap but you have to be AGGRESSIVE!!!! if you are not a negotiator either bring a friend that is or buy from CL. I also found that Hertz used cars sometimes has good deals and you can get $500 off with a AAA member. just check there inventory online. but first find that car that you want and price out how much you want to pay OTD (out the door) after all taxes and then go to dealerships or online and search that way. if its more dont buy it even if they tell you its not possible to get that price, just walk out and go to another place.
