I’m not defending the wedding at all, but will just point something out. Cuomo promised both satmar rebbas that if they toned down their SImchas beis hashoevas this year then he won’t close shuls. Satmar followed through but the governor still closed the shuls, now there’s zero chance they don’t hold the wedding exactly the way want too.

If he would actually work with the community then he would see more willingness to follow some of the rules.
Right, because it’s so normal that Satmar is part of the only community in the state that refuses to comply with the laws agreed to and abided by the vast majority of citizens in the state. If you don’t like the rules, move, because everybody else agrees with and accepts (and not surprisingly, [Republican] judges keep on siding with the State as to the constitutionality of) the laws.

This is not an excuse for the Governor’s behavior, but to claim the actions/requests of Satmar are objectively reasonable is ridiculous. Not working with the community to circumvent the laws everyone else needs to follow is egregious behavior??

Would Yidden have done this in 1936?

100% look at Lakewood, no noise and ppl are somewhat  complying.

When ppl are forced to do stuff they tend not to listen.

It's like the gun argument, criminals don't seek a license.

The stuff the czar is putting out there is leaving no other explanation viable other then the fact that he's trying to shift blame on jews. Plane old anti semitism.

He is lying every day by saying ultra orthodox jews never followed the rules. Like every other community 99% did follow, 99% were closed during the so called first wave.
No, everyone but our communities in NY and NJ is complying with mask and distancing rules. Their messaging is working fine in most communities.

We got into a power struggle with a control freak. We should've been the adults in the room that worked on deescalation and disobeying the orders quietly without fanfare, while publicly appearing to be following mandates to allow Cuomo to save face. If we could've done that concurrently with a concerted effort to bring down positivity rates, and while studiously massaging Cuomo's ego for his cooperation with local officials and community leaders, this could've been done in 2 weeks, with Cuomo claiming another victory. Instead, we let the clown shows and 6 year olds dominate the media, got into shouting matches in public, and generally let this devolve into a mess that could easily have been avoided when a bit of discipline and maturity. We know how to play the diplomacy game as well as anyone, and to allow whatever narcissists to save face. We just couldn't control the children, and our own inner children, from taking over.

He made a promise to them if they complied with the rules he wouldn’t make harsher ones. They complied and he still shut the shuls. I don’t understand why he expects them to follow the rules this time.

By now the vast majority has been complying with mask wearing for a couple of weeks already.

Wrong. I don't know about your kids but mine were out of school for a full 3 months and every shul in my vicinity was locked as well.

Not even at first, it took a good couple of weeks. And there were pockets of non-compliance throughout. So the guy said never when he should have said 90% of the time? This is the hill we want to die on? His point stands: the rules were barely followed at all over the last 7 months. That doesn't justify what's happening now, but let's not pretend we've been a model of good behavior.

For us it was at least until Shavuous. And school was beyond that, closed for 3 months and reopened with revised hours just to finish off the last few weeks of school.

They weren't closed Purim. Most schools closed a week later, and minyan factories were still fully operational for another week after that. After Pesach, shuls started up again and schools tried opening under the radar and/or in private houses. By mid-Iyar, Covid was officially cancelled.

Even if we were not a model of good behavior, I know hundreds of families who did not attend minyan or send their kids to school and went out ONLY to buy groceries immediately from the start for at least 2 full months. Sorry, that's not just "barely following".

I don't know where you live, but in Brooklyn this was not the case. It was documented on DDF in real time.

Don’t you live in Florida? How would you know what did or did not happen in Ny. Most of the NY shuls, schools and stores were closed for 3 plus months. You must be getting your information from the news.

Not on Purim, but right after. And a week is shortly thereafter and exactly when it was ordered by government.

Schools opening under the radar didn't happen until Shavuous time.

Some people have a outcome before looking at the facts.

If u live in a bubble where no one around you  listens to rules, its ur problem, but that doesn't mean no one Ultra Orthodox is not and never did listen.

99% of shuls and schools were closed for a long  time, FACT.
