IMO we should compare FL to CA, neither of them got slammed in the beginning and while CA is still mostly in lockdown FL is basically wide open, yet somehow they have a nearly identical death rate (within 10% and that's without accounting for FL population being significantly older).
California had a variant.
Until Dec 1 2020, Florida has 18k deaths for 21m residents and Califronia has 19k deaths for 39m residents, so
Florida had 2x the deaths .
Yes, it's cherry picked data, but how do you explain the cherry picked difference in deaths??? Desantis prioritized the economy and general wellbeing over Covid death count, and it shows. He may have been right to do so, I don't know.
I'm guessing Florida is also reporting deaths later than CA so there's a bias in the last few weeks, and Florida is covering up so overall excess deaths would tell the real the story.
There is no debate overall Democratic areas fared far better than Republican areas. You can argue Democrats didn't have more restrictions, or you can argue restrictions did more bad than good, but it's impossible to argue that Democrats had more restrictions and they did more harm when Democrats demonstrably did better.
