What tag does is change the restrictions passcode not the main passcode. Also it seems that in this case the pass code was attempted too many time and the iPhone locked itself (the only way to open the iPhone is by doing a full restore).

The FBI wants a way to bypass that

They did the exact opposite.

Unless you mean that letting the entire criminal underworld and foreign governments have access to anyone's information is a lot safer for national security than to have a dead terrorsists useless data (the .01% that they don't already have).

When the get the dead terrorists 'useless' data, they can see with what he was on contact, & who helped him plan it. Or maybe you want that these planners should help some other Muslim terrorist plan a attack on the city that you live in.

They clearly say that they don't need to be I'm control of the software, apple should be the one controlling the software.

They have all his phone calls, texts, emails, browsing history, and just about everything else important about him thanks to the NSA and ther tracking programs. Yep they didn't get to see what apps are in what folders but yeah it's obviously much better to exploit a phone that hundreds of millions around the world rely while setting a dangerous precedent all in the name of "security".

Best of all, you guys swallowed the bait, hook line and sinker.

Must be amazing Apple propaganda. They got Google, Microsoft, and Facebook all backing them up. Must've used some extraordinary brainwashing techniques.

Someone has to exploit the software to access the data. Once 1 person has that exploit, you can consider the exploit public. Because with the right amount of motivation (think money or threat), a criminal or (foreign) government can get what he wants from the engineers that exploited iOS.

I don't think it's apple propoganda, I think it's government propoganda. They can good and well crack 128bit encryption with brute force anytime they are willing to put that many resources to work. Making copies of the encrypted data ensures that it won't be erased by failed attempts. But if people knew that it could be done, then developers would start using higher order encryption, which would increase the amount of resources needed or make it impossible altogether.

Just curious what you guys would say when China and other foreign governments demand Apple to do the same for them as they did for the FBI? China in the name of security, demands that the contents of the phones of terrorists (aka some guy who wrote a post online that's negative about the Chinese government) be available for their perusal or else they will make it illegal to sell the iPhone in China.

Of course they can. What I am sure the easiest way is, just have a new update pushed to it that disables the auto wipe after 10 wrong pw's disabled.

And you are right that they can just send it to the FBI on a thumbdrive. The issue they have is "ein ledover soif" Even now there are many iphones (many in NYC from what I understand) that the government would love to have unlocked, this is not just a one time thing as much as the government would like to portray it as such, and from that gets shared to other government which can subpoena apple to do the same for them....
