Non-expert here. The US had a strategic reserve of petroleum, basically a stockpile, just in case (e.g. war, natural disaster, etc). Biden’s been fighting with the results of poor energy policy and high inflation and in order to keep gas prices down (it’s a noticeable indication of inflation) and mask these issues, the strategic petroleum reserves have been drawn on gradually to flood the market with supply and keep prices artificially low.
It’s important because it shows the administrations shenanigans, fudging the numbers, tricking Americans, and risking our safety in the process.
I’m sure someone else can be more accurate/clear than me.
