Why all the confusion?

A core i3 is enough for light use.
Over time the laptop will probably slow down, so if he wants it to last a while (get a desktop) I'd go for the i5.

Took me a second to realize the OP was in 2010 ;D

I bought my laptop for typing my wife was teaching at that time, I told the seller I need it for teaching preparing sheets etc, I was very annoyed when I couldn't efficiently run visual studio/Android studio/mysql server, I don't blame anyone but myself.
