By a 36-1 vote, the New Jersey State Senate passed a bill today which will require to require landlords to accept credit cards as a form of payment during the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill now goes to the Governor for his signature

I w'd  raise the rent to cover the cost if my tenant wants to use CC only, there are plenty alternatives zelle etc

I don't think most landlords will complain about the 2-3% processing fees. It may bring in much needed cash flow. It's also possible that this bill may pave a way for evictions to restart eventually.

If the tenant says, sorry I only got CC to pay do we need a law or the landlord would figure it out, especially now when you can't evict which was never easy, who needs laws on every dispute

Is your problem what the law says or that the lawmakers got involved at all?

Any transaction fees when paying rent with a credit card would fall on the tenant, the bill states

Since covid i have been offering any tenant the ability to pay rent with a cc for no fee. So far 2 tenants have taken me up on it. I have found tenants would rather owe their landlord (possibly because they understand the path to eviction is so long) then owe the cc companies.

They're broke, why would they want to pay 25% interest if they can get interest free?

Free market fixes most things. Doesn't stop politicians from mixing in. Most likely, they wanted to appear as if they were doing something for the little people without actually causing too much of a ruckus. This isn't likely to get too much pushback from landlords, so it's a freebie.

There are numerous companies offering CC acceptance for landlords at the tenant's expense. If you need someone reach out to me and I haven associate who does this and I have only gotten positive feedback from those using him.
