Short version - After they made me take out a 6-inch metal pipe, they left a pouch with 4 shuriken (throwing stars) in the same small side pocket of my knapsack.

We had the TSA agent pull our bag to the side, he opened it up, goes to the corner while checking back at his screen for where the "contraband" is, picks up a package of wipes, rolls his eyes and put it back.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

In 1998 I was flying from YYZ to EWR and someone sent a wedding gift for someone. When they put my bag through the scanner they asked me to open one of the pockets. When they saw the wrapped box they waved me on.

Hate you ever seen a hunk of C-4? Looks just like a package of Luvs. Just be careful which one you take into the bathroom.

A friend of mine always has his kitchen knife on flights. He has a count how many flights he flew with it. And he happily cuts his fruit with it. Never heard a boo.

I know it may sound weird, but it's true.

Friend of mine put a small wig box through the scanner. It got pulled to the side.
TSA agent sternly asks what's in there. When she replies that its a wig, the agent starts laughing!!
She turns the screen around so my friend can see what she saw.
Seems like the scanner doesn't pick up hair, so all she saw was a head with metal pins sticking out...

Bullets.
nice.
when i was a bochur, i shnorred some bullets from chayalim, and wanted to bring the back to the states. being to scared to pack them in my suitcase, i opened my alarm clock and replaced the battery with the bullets, it was just about perfect size, and i figured there is no way a scanner can pick up the difference.
on the way to the airport i had a panic attack, realizing that although 99% chance it would go unnoticed, if it doesnt, connecting explosives to a clock to bring on a flight might land me in hot water, so i just tossed it.

and when the custodian noticed the good clock in the garbage and found bullets inside, and called security, and they started sweeping the airport checking cameras for the culprit...
you got out just in time ;)

Cannot even count the number of times I got those two items mixed up by accident

Oooh this is a good thread. Reminds me of the time I bought a beer in a certain airport AFTER security only to learn that there is another security check because it was a TLV flight. I was so happy to have that beer and wasn’t looking to throw it away. After pleasantries were exchanged with the TSA agent, I convinced her to let me keep my beloved bottle of beer 😊.  A few months later , I took the same route and met the same TSA person whom I than convinced to not make me take my laptop out of the bag to be xrayed as I had a lot of stuff and it would be a pain...

Can’t say the same for the obnoxious agent in PTY, who wouldn’t let me take my $8 Starbucks coffee, which I bought not 10 feet away from the gate (airside.) After some pleasantries she gave me a handwritten SSSS, because I refused to walk through the metal detector without my cap. couldn’t stop laughing all the way to my seat.

I had a good one at PTY. This was originally a border control issue and then a security issue...

When arriving in Panama at border control the agent- who looked to be about 16 years of age- first took my passport and assumed it was the hubby's (the pic is bad- I'll admit, but it clearly says Female on it...) and then when he got to the other passport he realized the issue and didn't know how to correct it. I don't remember if they fingerprint or take a pic, but it was something that had to match up with the passport presented. Eventually his supervisor decided to waive us through because he couldn't correct it either.

Fast forward a few days and we're in the airport again to head home. We get to security and they won't let us through- problem being that our passports don't match what was previously in the system- we then showed them that it's a simple mixup- our passports were switched in the system. Of course this agent had to go and get his supervisor, who didn't know what to do either and decided to just waive us through (thankfully). I wonder if it's a permanent switch in their system and what will happen if I travel there again.

Bullets may get by TSA, but they won't go unnoticed by their Russian counterparts...
