I want to start a thread that tracks a deal threshold price for drives by capacity. IY"H I have the capability to keep it up to date. The idea is that you see a sale, compare it to this thread, and then you'll know if it is a good price or not.
Should I put it in Tech Talk or in Deals?

For the record, I would put a wiki at the top and it would look something like this:
[EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES
1TB: do not spend more than $46.
2TB: do not spend more than $56.
3TB: do not spend more than $74. Note that these may be old models so double-check for a warranty of at least 2-3 years.
4TB: do not spend more than $92.
and so on.]
This would tell you, for instance, that a sale on a 4TB drive for $85 is good. It would also tell you that when you need one now, you should be able to find on at $92 if you know where to look.

The list would have a side-effect of enabling people to post a metzia because they compared it to this list and see it is a good price. I would make a category for internal and external hard drives and SSDs, seeing as I already made a thread for large internal SSDs. Maybe later I can add flash drives and SD/micro SD cards.
(Agav, the thread would be a good place to post deals, so maybe the Deals thread is a better spot.)
What do the readers think?

When it comes to SSDs the space per dollar isn't the only thing that matters and unfortunately dram, PCIe etc. isn't simple for the average buyer.

I'm probably going to have different categories for SSDs - one for SATA (those are all so close to identical as to not matter), those for budget PCIex3 (Kingston's cheap line, Intel 670p, etc), those for fast PCIex3 which perform well (here they are very different but not to the average consumer, and those who really copy 4K videos on and off constantly will be warned away), and those for PCIex4 drives that perform better than the x3s. (Some don't, and so, are a waste of money unless you get capacity instead.)

Right, plus ascribing a dollar value per point. Like if you aren't getting the $9 per point you would get if you used them for an overwater bungalow in the Maldives but instead booked Southwest flights, you're throwing away money and should pay cash for the flight. Well, not true for everyone.

I don't have a problem with Dan and others speaking like this, it's true, very helpful, and interesting. I just think the other more "pedestrian" values can also be mentioned and certainly not mocked or delegitimize.
