Custom domain. Were using network solutions. Its a disaster in outlook, and even worse on our phones. (I can bet everyone will say it has nothing to do, but I feel that going with google is the safer bet)

So you want to use your same email@customdomain, just with google apps?

Google has step by step instructions on what the MX recrods must be for many major hosting companies. I did it on a couple of my domains, and it works.

Right, but he also needs to transfer his old emails, no?
I did something very similar. It takes time but worked for me and there is little to no risk.
The only prerequisite is that you currently have all your emails in outlook. Let me know and if you do, I think I'll write it up in a new thread (it's too long for this thread).

the reason for the switch is bec last night he sent me a file and when i opened it up on my phone (thru the stock email) the attachment was from a diff email that i received. in addition, he lost all his contacts and there not backed up correctly in outlook.

Okay. On second thought I'm just going to post it here. Note: you can't do this on a mac; I hope you have windows!

1. Set up google apps for your domain. The first step should be to change your MX records (google apps should tell you that). Note: there may be a small disruption of email while this switch goes over. I wish it wasn't the case, but I don't know a way around it. You can contact your web host to find out if there's any way around it.
2. Once the MX record changes go through, set up the email users in google apps. (google apps will tell you if the MX records are good). You can now send and receive emails by logging in to your google apps account. The rest of the instructions are for bringing in your old stuff.
3. Backup the PST file containing your emails etc. (This is important - just in case something goes wrong!)
4. Download Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Outlook and install it. https://tools.google.com/dlpage/outlookmigration Give it the login information of your new google apps email
5. Choose to import mail, contacts, etc. from your existing outlook profile.
6. Give it some time to import your old emails. Keep an eye out that they come in in the folders you had them in. If this doesn't happen (I'm not sure if it will), and you keep your emails in different folders, stop here and let me know because there's another way to do it that is klutzier, but will copy the folders.
7. Give it some more time to sync the emails up to google's servers. (This took a few days in my case! If you usually use wireless internet, you might want to plug into wired internet just for this.)
8. Double check in your online email account (looks just like gmail but you log in to name@domain.com) to see if your emails, contacts, calendar, etc. are there. If anything's missing there is probably a way around it so let us know.
9. Give yourself a pat on the back, and let us know how it went.

PS: I hope I got this right - it's about a year since I've done this so I can't promise that this is exactly how the steps work. If you have any questions or concerns along the way feel free to ask! Good luck!

Is there a thread that lists cheap/useful products from Amazon Subscribe and Save to use to "top off" a monthly order. I assume these are constantly changing but it could be useful to see what others have found.

Some cheap products can actually be bought for "free" if by adding it to your order you save more than you are paying for the new product. This is often true very cheap products when you already have 4 items that month. Even if it doesn't come out completely free, it can still be worth buying an extra product if you end up with a significant discount on it (such as if by adding a $10 product you save $8 you just bought that $10 product for $2).

I made myself a spreadsheet where I type in the products and prices of the things I need that month and then I enter the extra products and it calculates how much I save on my current products by adding the extra ones and it also calculates the "true cost" of the extra products (cost of added products minus savings on original ones). Feel free to copy this spreadsheet and use it for your own orders.
