What is the effect of a plat having a non medallion as a companion re upgrade priority?
Do golds traveling alone get upgraded first?

So it seems the best move is to request the upgrade alone and once/if it has been confirmed, request for the companion as well?

#2 is not always true.

If Status member and companion are on the same record locator, then both clear @24.

If status member and companion are on different record locators, then each at their own window.

As you mentioned, request the upgrade alone with just the Plat on the itinerary, and let the gate agent know you're travelling with the Non-elite on a different itinerary -- and ask them to please see what they can do for the companion.  You won't get better preference for the non-elite, but you will get them upgraded with you if there is a seat available before boarding
