Well some people are already advertising Dubai wedding planning (similar to the one held in Greece a while ago, with the collapsed bridge video). Sooner or later that will be the destination for all Rebbishe Chasunos.
Lol, if you think Cuomo is tough, try doing this in Dubai.
No wedding of more than 200 people will happen in Dubai in the foreseeable future.

IDK about that. Maybe they will make special exceptions for royalty. Remember, this isn't a democracy, they can make up their own rules for royals. IDK. In any event, it can definitely host a royal event.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Do you seriously think 1000's of chassidim are going to fly to Dubai for a wedding because it's illegal in Israel and they're more likely to get an exception in Dubai?

Maybe maybe the first time for the novelty. Like when Belz made their first grandchild's wedding a few years ago.

After that, unlikely.

Every 2 weeks for sure not happening.

But the whole idea isn't happening in the first place IMO.

Are we discussing yet why the same Rebbes who enforce takana weddings for their Chassidim hold 7,000 person weddings for a grandchild every two weeks?  :)

Sounds like you were waiting patiently for this :) so let's tackle it.  This is my opinion.

There's a difference between making a super fancy wedding and a wedding with a ton of people.

Chassidim want these grandiose weddings for their Rebbes children and grandchildren. Even those chassidim willing to forgo luxury weddings want them. Its their form of entertainment and they really enjoy it - I do too in the event that I attend such a wedding. Its not really considered a luxury wedding - you get some water, gefilte fish, and a chicken drum stick, not what one would call a fancy wedding by any stretch of the imagination.

Its just the scale of the population at the wedding that is grandiose and far surpasses the number of guests any wealthy wedding would manage to pull together.

So I'm not sure this answer will satisfy you, but this is one of the reasons these weddings continue to take place. Maybe others can shed light as to other reasons.

Thanks for being the Nachshon. :)

Nice try, but it's still missing oomph. They limit Chassidim's weddings to a maximum number of guests, too. It's not just the food. You just don't need thousands of people by every wedding.  It's extravagant by virtue of the number of people. If they truly want their Chassidim to actually make toned down, simpler weddings then they should lead by example. It doesn't matter if they have a reason to be exempt. A takana with exceptions is not a takana.

It's more of an event for the chassidus, rather than just a wedding. In their eyes, it would be like limiting the amount of people in shul for simchas Torah. Additionally, it doesn't create any pressure for those who aren't rebbe's.

I agree with you completely and that was what I summarized in my first reply on this topic.

It's considered a major event, like lag b'omer etc or simchas bais.

And I can totally understand why they would go through everything to pull it off but the whole way that they printed it in the newspaper it was kind of like that they were posting about how communist russia was outwitted

I wasn't commenting on the event with regard to the current situation. I was responding to someone who asked why it's not subject to takanos.

A guy robs 100 banks. Someone rats him out. The issue is someone ratted him out and not that he robbed 100 banks. You can't make this stuff up.

In addition, and this may be hard to understand for non chassidim, this event is one of their only outlets of entertainment. (Even without Covid) most chasidim don't attend sporting events or movies. So these weddings are something they really look forward to and are willing to make an exception for their rebbe.

I'm not justifying anything, only trying my best to explain. And having seen this argument play out elsewhere I know there will still be some or even many who begrudge these large scale weddings and I understand that.
