It's in the Bible: ובחוקותיהם לא תלכו
ETA: I'm not confirming that's where it stems from, but if it is, then you have a makor
It's not a חוק. Though, I'm no dayan to say how much of a tradition it has to be by them in order to consider it assur.

We do presents but definitely not 8 per kid. I try to get one book for each kid. We are overflowing with toys so I'm trying to limit that. So far, my 9 year old is getting a camp chair, knicks sweatshirt and a new book. That's probably it. My 8 year old is getting a knicks sweatshirt, camp chair and a puzzle, my 6 year old wants Pokemon so she's getting cards one night, a binder another and then a book, my 4 year old asked for play dough so I'll probably get some, a book and some unknown present. My husband and I only get stuff when we see things the other one wants so many years it's nothing.

Pretty sure this is what was meant:

That's what I do. I've heard some say that the gift giving stems from what the goyim do this season. Though, I havn't heard a clear makor for this, which would make it prohibited.

The Knicks sweatshirt is a punishment or an ironic present?

Was he a Roidef min HaCovid or a Roidef acher HaCovid?
Small people talk about other people.
Average people talk about things
BIG PEOPLE TALK ABOUT IDEAS.
