Small House Pets
« on: November 25, 2020, 12:28:16 AM »
We are considering getting our kids a small pet for Chanukah. Not sure if it'll be a hamster, guinea pig, bunny or something else.

Anyone have recommendations as far as what species to get, what habitats to buy and where to buy them, any other tips?

Hamsters are great and easy to take care of, but personally I don't like them as they don't interact with you. I feel that that's a critical requirement for a pet.

Never had a guinea pig, but they supposedly smell. Otherwise they seem pretty perfect.

I currently have a rabbit, and have had multiples in the past. They're fantastic, but really need a lot of space to run around in. So unless you toilet train them, it'll quickly become annoying.

I've had quail recommended to me, they sound awesome but I still need to figure out their dust bath needs. Plus they lay delicious eggs ;D.

Quail is שְׂלָו from the Parsha. Gotta be tasty too.

It might not fit in a small house.  ;)

Are guinea pigs more interactive than hamsters?

I heard that rabbits are hit or miss, some will interact with you and some will want nothing to do with you.

It's a pity that rabbits are non-Kosher animals, because if they were Kosher, you would have a good backup plan in case shaim or yafes decides to be anti-social...

Birds can be a good option. They interact and also stay in their cage. Parakeets are small and easy, or if you're adventurous go for a slightly bigger bird (bigger = smarter) but make sure you don't pick a noisy breed.

Take DW and kids to a breeder or shelter. It will be hard for them to say no.

I've always had a problem with the concept of keeping a creature with the gift of flight in a cage.

You are underestimating the power of a puppy and the kids instantly falling in love with one.

No issue with you having that opinion. But it's not really that different from keeping horses in a pen (horses need open space to run) or fish in a tank (they miss out on the open water), etc.

And birds don't have to stay in the cage all the time, you can let them out to play.

In all seriousness, we should also get recommendations for pets that are good for a small house.
