We ended up with a Syrian hamster they we got from a shelter. Took a little while (and few nasty bites) for it warm up but now it actually enjoys being held.

I really want egg laying chickens but 3 problems:


1) my wife won't let
2) it's illegal where I live
3) I have neighbors

Add to that, they take more effort than expected for upkeep, especially as they grow larger.

Eventually, I guess...When I was younger I had one for a few years, and it still fit in a 20-gallon tank.

Is it a lot of work to care for it? Good pet for a 5 year old?
