Would You Skip A DDMS Deal When Listed As An Advertisement?

Yes
No
I'd be more hesitant to buy, but would check out the deal.

Inspired by DDMS comments :)

I personally skipped the HP deal (and this one) after grabbing a much better deal seeing it listed as a sponsored post.

99% of the time I'd skip a deal without even looking into it. Funny thing is this hp deal I didn't and actually looked into it a little

Probably due to the lack of advertisement in the title.

Which is actually quite annoying @Dan

I would not sell life insurance to this thread... I have a feeling it's not bound for longevity.

Here are my thoughts on this subject:

There is a lot more to advertising than just numbers and exposure. The sentiments your brain feel when you see an ad shapes your opinion about it.

For example, in most ads, a person will have a subconscious hesitation to believe the product or service is for their benefit, because someone - by very virtue that they paid money for me to see the ad - is set to gain by me believing it. Seeing the advertiser as the person on the other side of the money-making transaction creates a barrier.

On the other hand, when an ad is put forth by someone you feel a connection to, such as a plug on DDF for one's own product, many more people will take it seriously, as most of us have a natural trust and camaraderie to our fellow DDFers. So we are therefore much more inclined to follow through with the purchase - based solely on where (and from who) we saw the ad.

Paid ads on Dans Deals - while they may not have the benefit of an intimate plug by a DDFer, still have benefits. Many frequent DansDealers - even if they are not DDFers - feel like they are part of a club (partially thanks to the mood set by Dan's commentary posts and other non-deal posts). This is obviously accentuated greatly for DDFers. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, people associate what they see on Dans Deals with savings, and their brain will make a connection between the familiar blue logo and the "savings" they are reading about on the page. This makes Dans Deals much more effective than news sites - even if someone feels a personal connection to that news site.

This is just my opinion (naturally), take it or leave it.

And no, Dan did not write this post using my username.  ;)

Being that I'm expressing my opinion without being derogatory, I'm open to giving out a policy :)

Honored to have my comment featured in a DDF thread :)
My answer is generally yes. I trust Dan, so after hearing him say that it truly is the best black friday deal, I then would have bought it if I needed it. But again, in general, ads likely stop many people from buying, so HP probably did a bad job here (besides how much profit are they making if it really is such a strong deal??)

In general most "deals" posted on the MS are worthless IMO. Which is why I only want to receive one daily email not more.

There are some good deals every once in a while but the main thing is the different information shared.

I don't think anyone can (reasonably) complain about DD's advertising disclosure. It's a heck of a lot clearer than lots of other places.

Better for who?
Better for both parties as transparency always is.
If some ads are sent (on Telegram) with the "sponsored" prefix shouldn't they all be? If some ads are categorized under "advertisements" on DDMS, shouldn't they all be?

  • Location: As always, silence is NOT an admission of agreement on DDF. It just means that people lack the stamina to keep on arguing with made up "facts", illogical arguments, deceiving statements, nasty and degrading comments, and fuzzy math. - @yelped

No.

(Disclaimer: I have no idea about how sponsored deals work on DD.)

I don't believe all ads are equal. When I'm pushing my random no-name product from Amazon, and I reach out to DD to advertise, they need to let everyone know that they aren't standing behind this product or the "deal" and it's just an ad. However, when there's a good deal and someone from DD reaches out to the merchant to try to make some money off it it, whether by referral links or stickied posts, the deal stands on its own and all that's required is a small disclaimer that DD is making money. My $.02.
Failing at maintaining Lurker status.
