Mine is a 6x5 or so grid of this:

Do you want to play a board game, digitally or in Lakewood NJ? PM me. (Can be asynchronous, i.e. take turns whenever)

It's a beautiful picture! Is it practical as a desktop background though? Does the dark parts mess up visibility of shortcuts?

Put all the files in one folder and delete all the shortcuts and let me welcome you to the search bar ;). Unless your running windows xp then I can't help you..

Already did that! And I clean up my desktop every month or two.

Here is my desktop. I grayed out certain names for privacy reasons. I could clean up a few things now, but most of them are important for quick access.

And yes, I use the search bar all the time.

Why are any shortcuts (to programs) necessary?
I would suggest to try to keep things to the edges, it makes it cleaner.

ETA
"This pc" is on the desktop always just has to be enabled. No need to create your own shortcut.

You are correct about a few of the programs, but some of them need to be on the desktop. I need instant access to Ring to see who's at the door. Zoom and Free Conference Call often have to be accessed quickly if there is an ongoing meeting. VLC is needed so that I can drop files into the icon and have them play. The rest are just there as part of the set, but I could technically remove them.

Regarding keeping things at the edge, I find it easier to group genres together.

I pin apps that I use often to the taskbar so I can keep the desktop empty
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Hitting the windows key then typing "zo.." and hitting enter, doesn't require any mouse input and should be faster. As for vlc have it pinned to your taskbar (which is anyway more useful when your trying to drag from an open program).

בשעת הדחק have the grouped sections split up by folders, you may even find it faster.

I also noticed your icons size seems a bit too big. My 14" laptop has 8 x 20.

Do you really have an itunes shortcut on your desktop?🤦‍♂️

Okay. After much soul-searching, I've narrowed down my shortcuts, and I've discovered that I'm no different that just a regular guy. I need Zoom and Ring to stay, and VLC doesn't seem to work for dropping when it's on the bar.

You'll get my like when that one icon gets moved to the corner ;)

As for your earlier question Search > Themes and Related Settings > Desktop icon settings

If you look at the icon, it's a recording of the Levaya of Rav Elya Meir Sorotzkin, which took place today, and I need it just for a day or two. It's what I'm listening to now, so I didn't bother moving iT. But, what won't I do for a like, so...

"A good background is like black pepper - if you taste it that means you put in too much." -a wise man (me)

I find this background extremely non-intrusive. It's nice without ever being a distracting presence.
