A seven day suspension does not sound unreasonable
What was it for? Permanent cancellation isn't necessarily unreasonable either, it all just depends on the reason

I'm actually in Uganda now. You have no idea what's going on.

I'll post more from Ethiopia in a few hours lol.

So basically the president shut down all social media in Uganda, so TW/FB/et al retaliated by locking a bunch of gov and officials' accounts. Then the gov went ahead and effectively shut down the country's main cell phone provider by throttling them so much as to render the network unusable.

There might be more, but this is what I'm hearing from people I'm meeting here. They're basically expecting bloodshed this week.

Were the shutdowns before they locked account or after? (Or were some before and more after?)

I thought I read that the Govt. shutdowns were because some accounts were blocked.

That's opposite of what people are saying here (doesn't mean they're right of course)

Either way, it's evidence of the incredible power the tech companies wield. We should think long and hard how to reign that in.

I think the answer is to consider big tech companies as utilities and regulate them as such. It will be subjective as to what big tech companies should he considered utilities, but I think itís easy enough to say that Google/Apple/Facebook/Amazon are all easily viewed as utilities and just as important as a phone utility. When a internet backbone such as AWS can deplatform a business arbitrarily we have a major issue.

Are you sure you'd rather have the government police speech?
Google/Facebook/Apple may have an audience that isn't accessible without them, but AWS isn't an internet backbone - there are many peers who do the exact same thing, and they do little more than you can accomplish with your own servers for a higher price.

If you use AWS-specific services using their APIs etc, you canít just port your servers to a different host, you have to rewrite (perhaps even re-engineer) your code to adapt it to whatever youíre moving to.
