Will you continue to use WhatsApp after Feb. 8th?
« on: January 10, 2021, 01:27:35 PM »
WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned messenger that claims to have privacy coded into its DNA, is giving its 2 billion plus users an ultimatum: agree to share their personal data with the social network or delete their accounts.

The requirement is being delivered through an in-app alert directing users to agree to sweeping changes in the WhatsApp terms of service. Those who don’t accept the revamped privacy policy by February 8 will no longer be able to use the app.

The poll doesn't have an option of continuing to use Whatsapp

If someone doesn't have a FB account, does it change anything to him ?

*Yo ssi's Take*
In short what's going on: WhatsApp has updated their policies to allow them to share information with 3rd parties which can include advertisers etc.. while they won't be sharing your actual messages, they may share your phone number, app logs, status messages, profile name, profile picture, IP address and all transactions in their payment option they have in the works. Basically anything not E2E encrypted (see below).

Should you be worried?
Yes and no, depending on your level of comfort. I'd assume most facebook users are already having a significant amount of data shared.

Why are people moving?
Mostly because of the way WhatsApp is being run under facebook and where it may lead. It's definitely a good platform to be moving away from.

What is end to end (E2E) encryption?
It's a secure way to send messages without it being passed through or stored by a 3rd party. Something which isn't E2E encrypted your giving the option for the 3rd party's server to be compromised, and a potential point of entry, not to mention the 3rd party can access your data (WhatsApp messages calls and video calls are E2E encrypted). That's the reason at times you couldn't download that picture from a group because the picture has to be physically on the phone of the sender and isn't stored on the cloud.

What are the alternatives?

 *Signal*
*Most closely resembles WhatsApp as it only sends E2E encrypted messages, but instead of being run by a big corporation, it's run by a non profit with security as it's focus.
The cons:
Having real E2E encryption means your data can't be backed up (to the cloud), because as soon as you back it up your relying on a third party to store the data and that ruins the encryption (So if you have your WhatsApps backed up to google drive or iCloud your basically loosing your E2E encryption). Signal "solves" this problem by only allowing you to preform a local backup which you have full control over (which uses your space on your hard drive)

 *Telegram*
*A feature rich messaging app with lots of functionality and multiple advantages.
*One of the main features of Telegram is it's cloud storage, nothing has to be saved to your phone and everything is stored on telegrams servers. You can share files up 2GB(!) you can have all your pictures and videos taking up zero space on your phone, and as soon as you need it you can redownload it. It allows for a multi device login because everything is stored on the cloud.
So the obvious con with that is it's not E2E encrypted because that would make it loose all it's functionality. So Telegram has an additional style chat called secure chat. It allows for E2E messages which are only stored on one device and has all the advantages that come with E2E (think of the time you wanted to send someone a picture of an ID)

The cons:
Telegram allows searching globally for chats of all kind and therefore different companies have made versions of telegrams to solve those issues.

Notes:
Telegram regular chats are still secure, more details about that on their website. (The FBI tried to get in but haven't..)
WhatsApp has a status feature which I don't believe signal or Telegram have (it as well isn't E2E).

What will they realistically/actually be sharing with 3rd parties?

Do I understand correctly, whatsapp can't share content of messages because it's E2E encrypted, but telegram could, in theory, if they decided to go that route?

If they changed their privacy policy. Not to mention it's against the founders whole purpose of it's creation.
Secure chat will still be E2E.

Ordering a Pizza in 2022

CALLER:
    Is this Pizza Hut?

GOOGLE:
No sir, it's Google Pizza.

CALLER:
I must have dialed a wrong number, sorry.

GOOGLE:
No sir, Google bought Pizza Hut last month.

CALLER:
OK. I would like to order a pizza.

GOOGLE:
Do you want your usual, sir?

CALLER:
My usual? You know me?

GOOGLE:
According to our caller ID data sheet, the last 12 times you called you ordered an extra-large pizza with three cheeses, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms and meatballs on a thick crust.

CALLER:
Super! That’s what I’ll have.

GOOGLE:
May I suggest that this time you order a pizza with ricotta, arugula, sun-dried tomatoes and olives on a whole wheat gluten-free thin crust?

CALLER:
What? I don’t want a vegetarian pizza!

GOOGLE:
Your cholesterol is not good, sir.

CALLER:
How the hell do you know that?

GOOGLE:
Well, we cross-referenced your home phone number with your medical records. We have the result of your blood tests for the last 7 years.

CALLER:
Okay, but I do not want your rotten vegetarian pizza!  I already take medication for my cholesterol.

GOOGLE:
Excuse me sir, but you have not taken your medication regularly.  According to our database, you purchased only a box of 30 cholesterol tablets once at Lloyds Pharmacy, 4 months ago.

CALLER:
I bought more from another Pharmacy.

GOOGLE:
That doesn’t show on your credit card statement.

CALLER:
I paid in cash.

GOOGLE:
But you did not withdraw enough cash according to your bank statement.

CALLER:
I have other sources of cash.

GOOGLE:
That doesn’t show on your latest tax returns, unless you bought them using an undeclared income source, which is against the law!

CALLER:
WHAT THE HELL!

GOOGLE:
I'm sorry sir, we use such information only with the sole intention of helping you.

CALLER:
Enough already!  I'm sick to death of Google, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and all the others.  I'm going to an island without the internet, TV, where there is no phone service and no one to watch me or spy on me.

GOOGLE:
I understand sir, but you need to renew your passport first. It expired 6 weeks ago...

Welcome to the future
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.
