A lot of people think that Pence served as a counterbalance to Trump all these years and like him for what he brings to the table, too.

I agree with that. But too many people think otherwise.

Which is pretty clear from the text of the amendment. It says "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office." If he's doing his job in a way that you think is wrong (or even illegal), the 25th amendment is irrelevant.

And yet, I doubt there is a single person who is calling for the 25th amendment to be invoked that didn't say that Trump was fomenting sedition by advancing the (equally ridiculous) interpretation of the constitution that would allow Pence to decide to reject votes unilaterally.

25% of people who voted for Turmp now blame him for the Capitol attack. Some of those won't vote for Pence.
The MAGAs hate Pence even more, and won't vote for him.

There is no chance the GOP will risk putting forth a candidate who has both fringes against him, no matter how big the middle group is. Nikki Haley on the other end came out against Trump pretty early, but was still quiet enough the MAGAs don't know enough to hate her (albeit I personally think there are too many old conservative Republican voters who simply won't elect a woman)
