Staples Gift Card Problem
« on: January 11, 2021, 08:21:54 PM »
I bought five gift cards in person at Staples and gave them as gifts. None of them are working and the card company says they were not loaded/activated. Staples says they were.
Anyone have experience with this? The card company says I should physically bring them back to Staples and tell them they were not loaded; if they deny it, call them from the store and they will testify that it never loaded.

I would try working with the store first.
I tried that once, in the end he couldn't fix it so I had to dispute, but would still go that route again.

What type of Gift Cards? In what way is it not working? What are you trying to do?
If it's Visa GC, you might need to register it first (https://mygift.giftcardmall.com/) depending on how you are using them.

Usually it only prints out the receipt once it activates the card

Makes sense. The manager at Staples said someting about it being a different type of transaction if the activation doesn't occur... When I get all the cards in my possession, I'll go into the store and see what happens.

Gift card purchases scare me, but I continue to make them because they can be accompanied by a nice bonus. I worry about employee theft of funds.

That happened to me with a McDonald's gift card. I went back to the restaurant and they were able to check the transaction history on the card and saw the funds added then taken off. Evidently the employee who sold me the card took the funds from it. I was a little suspicious when I picked the card at the register, funded the card right there, and the employee took the card with him and said he'd be back.

Hopefully for you, they can see the funding transaction and any use of the cards, or if not actually funded, a receipt can show that the cards were never funded.

So it actually had not been activated. Went back in with all the cards and they fixed it.
