Sounds like a mark up to mark down to me.
If you're comparing Macy's $395 sticker price for a synthetic suit to Land's End's cheaper (around $340) sticker price for a 100% wool suit (I bet the quality/craftsmanship is night and day, as is Land's End's return policy) then this conversation is a non-starter.
Another example is Clark's. Someone recently posted a 50% offer on DDF, but the MSRP for the shoes I browsed was $80-100 (and marked down from there), so 2-3x the price paid after coupon and closer to a fair value for the item. This Macy's suit has a sticker price that's an inflated 6x the value.
ETA: My argument is that some brands (the two examples I cited) have what I believe is a relatively fair sticker price for the quality product they're selling.
