Citi AA M/C application denied "max cards allowed 5"
« on: November 02, 2009, 12:24:12 AM »
I asked this question in the comments under Dan's post of his October deals, and Dan asked we move thediscussion here. So I am hoping someone can get me an answer. Thanks

I currently have 5 citi m/c card. 1 bronze and 4 platinums. I tried consolidating them but they told me that due to the new cc laws, they dont know how it will apply to this, so for now I can do it. I dont want to close cards as I dont want to lose the credit, So I applied for another one, just to get the bonus miles, and they told me that I have the maximum number of cards allowed. Dan, did you ever have such a thing? is it indeed so? or dont they know what theyre talking about?

why the oldest accounts? wouldnt it make sense to transfer to the newest ones in order to avoid the yearly fee?

what do you mean by credit reports purposes?
Part of your credit score is counted by how old your oldest account is.
If you have only had a credit account for a year it's hard to judge how creditworthy you are, but if it is 10 years old then it's far easier to determine your creditworthiness.

Another factor is how old your average account it.

Some people believe that if you cancel your oldest account then your score will go down.
In fact accounts stay on your credit report for years after they are canceled, so it shouldn't affect the score until years into the future which by then you'll have other older accounts...

I always try to get out of the annual fee of otherwise cancel accounts with annual fees or convert them into no-annual fee cards.

I wanted to book a Hilton Elite only reward.
Having the card gets you Silver status, and there's no annual fee.
Plus this way I didn't have to apply for the card.
