And no, I can't answer for everything he does/ has done, but it is possible to be frum and do things that are wrong. I don't think he ever intended to be a frum poster boy as much as a Jewish concept/value poster boy, which I think was his kavana. It's everyone else who decided for him that to spread Jewish values he's got to be as religious (or more so) than us, rightly or wrongly. He's not Chabad's 'success story' and he's definitely not anyone's Rav. Just a BT who ended up in a serious spotlight.

I'm with Armadillo here.

Sounds like from the topics, you can bet by the bookmaker whether he will stay frum or not.

Whether it looks pro or con, it shouldn't keep us busy.

Quote from @Matisyahu on twitter: "I want nothing at all! I don't want Your gan eden, I don't want Your olam haba... I want nothing but You alone." - Alter Rebbe GOOD YOM TOV

This is a quote from Hayom Yom and and a famous statement in Chabad. I am soooo confused...
Men zuch nisht Dine Olam Haboh
Men zucht nisht Dine Gan Eden
Men vil nisht chapen Diner Melochim
Men zuch nohr Dich alein

Anyone know where this is from?
If you don't care why would you comment?

It's from the Alter Rebbe, made into a song by 8th Day on Chasing Prophecy

I think the last line should be broadcast over and over again, as some have not clearly gotten it yet...

I'm sorry, but I have to -1.
Sports players and actors also complain about being help to a higher standard, but the bottom line is if you're in the spotlight you're a role model by default.

To call teachings of the Rashbi "ludicrous," complain about the myriad of rules, and to pose in questionable pictures with a "masseuse" that also appears on the covers of trashy magazines isn't behavior that most frum jews consider to be proper.

Does anyone really believe he will keep being frum?

Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I think he will. His wife said he is in a really good place in his life right now. So as ling as his family still supports him I think he is just going through a bump in the road but he still has it together in general.

I still find it ironic that ppl are giving their Loshon Hara opinions about another Jew - and saying how what HE is doing is wrong. More than a bit hypocritical if you ask me. (And even if you don't) :)

I'm with Dan on this one.
Taking off his beard is one thing, getting up in public and saying that after putting in a lot of thought into it he decided that something brought down in Kabbalah is ludicrous is a whole different story.

Truth is that if he decided to shave his beard, regardless of the reasoning, he'd have to explain it simply because he IS a public figure. In a way that's prob one of the most difficult aspects of being famous. People expect you to explain yourself. All he said was that he's not holding in a place in life where he feels that he needs his beard. Who cares?! I don't think that this was a chillul hashem...If he subsequently begins to act in a non frum manner publicly, that would be different! If anything his music video that came out last chanuka (miracle
) is more of a chillul hashem, featuring a provocative looking girl feeding grapes to 'antiochus' and a black santa....what's that?!

I think we give these things too much attention (guilty of hypocracy here...lol)

Doesn't he have an all-powerful chabad-hating "guru" in J'lem that he idolizes that that sent him down this path by telling him how chabad brainwashed him?

I've never heard this before and would appreciate a linky/source please.

And maybe not you, but I saw what people were saying on the Chabad sites, and they were definitely pretty hung up on the beard. Though I have a beard now, I trim it and I don't think I or anyone who shaves fully, is being moneia midas horachamim (at least not as a rule - I don't understand too much Kabbala, but I know Hashem loves me either way).

Matis has it wrong, he's giving people the wrong idea. What kabbalah says is that the beard draws down the 13 attributes of mercy. Interpreting that to mean that Hashem's kindness hinges on him having to confirm to rules is twisted/perverse.
