im saying that shaving the beard is not a big deal on its own, but when accompanied by the whole rules thing, its a much bigger issue

WNYC Radio had Reggae-Rapper Matisyahu on for an interview today, to talk about his new, beardless, look. Although he called this “the biggest transformation of his life,” Matisyahu assured his fans that he is still an observant Jew, and pointed out that the very next morning after removing his beard he went to the Mikvah and Davened Shachris with a Minyan. He said his wife and kids, who are in California, did not yet see him without his facial hair.

Based on that interview, I will be shocked if this man is a frum jew in 5 years from now.

Calling "ludicrous" the chasidic belief that the yud gimel midos ha'rachamim and G-ds mercy comes through the beard and what the tzemach tzedek paskened a d'oraisa is but a step away from calling "ludicrous" the need to keep kosher, observe shabbos, or tefillin in order not be cut off from G-d.

besides that i also found what he said about the whole mercy thing to mean that he believes he can do what he wants and if hes worthy G-D will save him! without trying to help the situation...

What if he bragged on twitter about not keeping shabbos or putting on tefilin, because there are just too many rules would some of you (AJK et al) feel differently?

I'm not talking about discussing the beard. I'm talking about all the claims that he's not or he won't be frum bec he shaved. Many times, when people become frum, they're at a "confused" point in life. They may go around to different sects of Judaism "trying" it out. At some point, they may very well decide that what they had learned previously is not the derech that they're interested in. That's how what I see happened here. And he's still frum. So it's still assur to say loshon hara about him. That's all. Sorry if I come across on the offensive, I don't mean to mess with anybody here, it just bothers me when I see people saying loshon hara about others - saying that the others aren't frum bec they did XYZ. What does that make the LH speakers? Frum?

As far as I know, that still wouldn't make LH muttar. Even if he said that, he's still not a mumar.

Doesn't he have an all-powerful chabad-hating "guru" in J'lem that he idolizes that that sent him down this path by telling him how chabad brainwashed him?
