Coffee for Espresso Machine (Latte Arts)
« on: February 15, 2021, 01:52:31 PM »
So I got the Breville Barista Express Espresso Maker a few months ago, now I am looking for good beans, I found a roaster in Brooklyn called City League Coffee, while his coffee is incredibly amazing I have to shell out around $17 for 10 ounces of beans... (BTW he delivers free in Brooklyn)

I tried Starbucks a few roasts, I find it to be too dark (yes it's smokey which people might like) but lacks the smoothness of the fresh coffee, also I am unable to get decent pressure level.

I am looking for cheaper but just as fresh/good options

Not cheap

Looks like the prices have gone up since I last checked there. It does get a little cheaper for the 2 lb bags, and 15% off auto-refills. Coffee is good, though.

What are you using for your machine? I am really looking for a cheap alternative like something you can buy at the store at high quality

I was using his stuff for a French press for a while, but lately I've been lazy and using a Nespresso, so I don't have any better options for you...

Something from Costco comes to mind, though never tried it and no idea what it'd be, but in general they are high quality for things like this and cheap.

Helpful, I know :P

(Seems around $5/lbs https://www.costco.com/whole-bean-coffee.html)

Thanks for the tips, was hoping for more DDFers with machines to have a discussion, the way we have discussions about smoking meat, the key when it comes to Espresso making is that the beans should be the freshest roast possible, that's why it costs so much to order from roasters as they send them out the day it's roasted, what I am looking for is beans that are usually sold fresh, I've read about Peet's, I think I am going to try it, Amazon is also selling them, maybe i should start off with a single pack from Amazon to see how fresh they are, would love to hear a from someone else if they are good

Try Whole Foods in Brooklyn. The beans are freshly roasted in store and are usually very good (though I haven't tried the espressos)

I bought a roaster a couple of months ago and roast every morning...

here is my order email:
2x Indian Mysore Nuggets - Extra Bold
1x Papua New Guinea Kainantu Org. - Konkua A/X
1x Indonesian Bali Blue Moon RFA Org.
1x El Salvador Cerro Las Ranas
1x Nesco Home Coffee Roaster W/ Free Shipping & 1 Lb Unroasted Colombian Coffee

If you don't like french or dark roast (I don't) forget about Costco.
Starbucks has medium roast, I think from Guatemala. I used to buy that before becoming a "roaster".

Nice was thinking about it actually, but decided to first learn my coffee making and latte arts before roasting, I have to get really hooked to the machine, so I don’t give it up too soon... are you also selling or just roasting for yourself?

I am just roasting for the mishpacha for now.
Did you try blond or medium roasts from Starbucks? Kenya African blend for example.

Short answer Amazon=Not Fresh, you can buy fresh online most roasters roast a few times a week, costs like $18 for 10-12 Oz of roasted coffee, I’m roasting my own with a FreshRoast SR800 machine, buying raw beans at approximately $8 per lb, it’s losing about 12% of its weight by roasting, takes roughly 20 minutes for 7.5 Oz (6.5 Oz after roasting), makes about 6-7 double espressos

Nothing beats freshly roasted beans, you can look up online there are hundreds of roasters with Shopify stores selling freshly roasted beans

Packaged beans will never be too fresh since it goes through a supply chain process till you get it, I’m referring to roasted beans, green beans don’t stale, about flavor I grind them while preparing the coffee, never add flavor or sugar to a latte I think it just kills it

If you search "freshly roasted coffee beans" on Amazon, you get a bunch of results. Are you saying that they are not really fresh, by the time they arrive?

Might be fresh, if it’s seller shipped you probably have a better shot
