A United Airlines flight was forced to return to Denver International Airport Saturday after it suffered an engine failure shortly after takeoff, sending aircraft debris raining down on soccer fields, homes and yards in a Denver suburb.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed in a statement that a Boeing 777-200 safely returned to the Denver International Airport after "experiencing a right-engine failure shortly after takeoff."

Is engine failure really that rare? To me it’s the rain of debris that sounds scary here.

Sounds like an oversimplification. Same presentation could have more to do with how the engineering of the engine casing/assembly, doesn’t necessarily point to the same root cause at all. If the investigators have any reason to believe these two incidents have anything in common it’ll be gone over with a fine tooth comb. Aviation is as safe as it is because they are so thorough in every angle here:

Engineering, materials, testing, certification, training, periodic inspections, maintenance, investigation, and a whole host of aspects I’m missing.

Why is the tweet calling it a United engine? United is the only ones with this particular engine on the 777?

I'm sure the NTSB would've sent investigators regardless. United has its own maintenance program which hypothetically may be the culprit.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said on Sunday it is issuing an emergency airworthiness directive following an engine failure of a United Boeing 777 in Denver, requiring immediate or stepped-up inspections of similar planes.

FAA Administrator Steve Dickson said in a statement late Sunday the directive covers Boeing 777 airplanes equipped with certain Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines and it "will likely mean that some airplanes will be removed from service."

Dickson said the initial review of Saturday's engine failure shows "inspection interval should be stepped up for the hollow fan blades that are unique to this model of engine, used solely on Boeing 777 airplanes."
