It's not limited to the internal network.
That very much depends on network configuration. Connecting to the router directly doesn't automatically expose it to the internet.

ETA: I assume you knew this; just clarifying.

A very true point. In addition exposing a port on one's router isn't recommended, for security reasons. It's definitely a potential use though.

Exposed to the internet is probably not the default for these kinds of things, and might not even be an option on some consumer routers that have such a USB storage feature.

Fortunately Port Forwarding is around on pretty much every router thanks to the gaming industry. (It definitely isn't the default)

Not sure how port forwarding is relevant when we’re talking about USB storage. So what if you forward a port, how secure is this drive?

If one wanted to access their network they can do so with a port forward. So regardless of how those files are stored, it should be possible. Easy? Probably not and I haven't seen anything with a built in UI for the onboard USB.

This guy asked why you’d want to have this USB drive on your network, i answered for internal access. You brought up external access, and now port forwarding, which are totally not relevant to this discussion.

Is it possible to host a file server/NAS over the internet? Yes. Is that what we’re discussing here? I don’t think so.

There are modded firmware options that have UI for storage, even torrent software so you can use your router to download torrents directly to the USB storage disk.

Don't think that we'll be much faster, you gotta do the upload on a device.

USB and/or the fact that it’s a lot of relatively small files is the bottleneck here, not the fact that it has to go through your computer.

Is there a way to speed up the uploads ?

You need to isolate the bottleneck(s).

If it’s a HDD you put into an enclosure yourself (and not an external drive you purchased that comes with the HDD already inside), you’ll get better throughout by installing the hard disk into a desktop computer instead of relying on USB.

If the external drive supports USB 3 and you’re plugged into a USB 2 port on the computer, use a computer with USB 3.

If you’re maximizing the internet connection with the upload, use an internet connection with faster bandwidth.

It’s good you’re backing up, as trusting an external HDD (especially the non-SSD variety, but any really) as the singular storage for your valuable data/images is a risky proposition.
