I am able to connect my hard drive directly to my router?I have an old drive with lots of family data on it, I am able to connect the hard drive directly the router via its USB connection?I'd rather not to use a server...
My router has a USB slot, but it's primarily meant for auto backups. What are you trying to accomplish? Why not just plug it in to your computer?
Its an Xfinity router.
Something like this can work easily with minimal or no setup regardless of which modem/router you have, as long as you have a free port:https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1297762-REG/us_robotics_usr8710_ushare_mini_nas_adapter.htmlETA: RaspberryPi can do this as well, but that might take require setup/technical aptitude.
Interesting was looking for a cheaper alternative.....
RaspberryPis can be cheaper, but it theoretically shouldn't be necessary.
Why shouldn't it be necessary ?
It should be possible but it may be firmware locked, check your settings and try it.
just to understand, how do you set where it should upload to ?
"it" should "upload to"?? WDYM?
why would someone want to connect a hard drive to a router ?
To create storage that’s available to any computer on their internal network. Imagine like a Google drive kinda thing, but located onsite where any of your family’s desktops or laptops can access the shared drive to save, browser, and retrieve files.
