Purim 5781
« on: February 22, 2021, 09:54:25 AM »
So besides being a short Friday (outside of Yerushalayim and Shushan), there's still this thing called Covid going around. In what ways, if any, do you plan to do Purim differently this year than in typical years - Megillah reading, collecting, seudah, mishloach manos, parties, etc.? Feel free to include location and Covid status (antibodies, vaccinated) if relevant to your plans.

Megillah - outdoor safe reading in my yard
Tzedaka - electronically
Seudah - with the bubble
MM - dropped at doorsteps, left at ours
Parties - none

Oy, R"S, hope you and everyone infected in your family has a full and speedy (by Purim for sure) recovery. I'd say OP was mostly asking about COVID-negative people, as your approach is the only viable one for people in your situation.

Same for me, except that I'll try to give matanos laevyonim in person, and will IY"H be reading Megilla for some isolated at-risk family members from their yard, hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Purim being on Friday makes this so much easier.

Thanks! Before I got COVID my plans were:

Megillah- in my shul which currently has a 10-person limit per room per Toronto's lockdown rules. Masks, SD.
Matanos l'evyonim- through my rav who will distribute it on the day of purim
Seudah- with my immediate family, parents, 2 unmarried siblings
Mishloach manos- with a mask outdoors
Parties- none

Purim being on Friday makes this so much easier.
Definitely.

I like this idea. Every year Purim I donate to CSSY because they support those in need and commit to actually distributing funds on Purim.

Yup. Out of curiosity, I've always wondered how these organizations ensure that you fulfill your obligation of matanos l'evyonim by giving to 2 people- I would assume that the money just all gets pooled and then they give each family whatever they need, so maybe my $100 donation is being split into a hundred $1 donations and I don't fulfill my obligation. I usually make sure to give 2 evyonim directly in addition to any funds/organizations. (This is not a comment about CSSY specifically, I don't know anything about them.)

With a rav who is distributing it himself I feel a bit more comfortable that he's ensuring that I fulfill my mitzvah. I've seen some rabbanim who literally have a bunch of envelopes for specific evyonim and they divide your donation into the envelopes, making sure that you give enough to 2 specific evyonim.

Give it to 2 different Rabbonim in different places.

Megillah - Same as every year
Tzedaka - Same as every year
Seudah - With extended family. Smaller than every year, because it is Friday not because of Covid.
MM - Same as every year
Personal Covid Status - Had Covid after Purim last year (has it been a year already?!)
Community Covid Status - Covid? What Covid? (Boro Park)

Having Seudah at home.
No parties.
I always give Matonas Levyonim to a Rav to distribute so no change there.
I’m sending MM for the Rabbeim & teachers with my kids to school. I had to make special kids-travel-to-school-friendly boxes. No big glass bottles.

Correct, or to one rav who makes sure to split your donation into significant donations to each evyon. I was asking about organizations who might split your donation into a hundred $1 donations.

Wife - with Covid now - has scaled down mishloach manos and plans to a simple bought thing, and I'm not planning on making deliveries, so if you want one, get your coat on and head over to my house. Thankfully I have antibodies and can answer the door.

I also have to borrow a megillah and lein for her. Thankfully, I've leined a number of times in the past and should hopefully be able to do it without much trouble.

Hoping to get a haircut for Purim. I spent the last 3 months in a place where it was illegal.
