Don't expect upgrades.
You can expect free lounge access worldwide (even in the US unlike with CO/UA/US *G), 3x70 pound bags for you and all companions, and priority luggage tags/checkin/security/boarding, etc.

Once you qualify it definitely makes sense to change your FFN at the gate.

BTW US officially only allows 50lb, but the one time I tried it I got a halfhearted comment from the rep after all the bags were checked

Nope. 0 zechus. If you ask and get a nice agent, they may do it, but as a rule of thumb airlines only upgrade their own status

I once tried online in the lounge. The system said it updated, but the GA said it didn't. Always better to double check in these situation
