Why? What's the big deal with gold status? There are lots of ways to access lounges, and the additional bag is only worthwhile for someone who flies often, in economy, with lots of luggage. Am I missing any other perks?

I've only started flying regularly a year ago and even my regularly is not really "regularly". It's too hard to know how my flying behavior will be in the future.

None are truly same day. You'll leave NY around noon and get back around 24 hours later. My flight was Oct 5-6. Here are some examples of similar availability at $763 for this route (other routes exist but this is the best from NY IMO). Date is for outgoing flight assuming the next flight back:

9/8 9/9 9/15 9/16 9/17 9/22 9/23 9/29 9/30
10/1 10/5 10/6 10/7 10/13 10/14 10/20 10/21 10/26 10/27 10/28 10/29 10/30 10/31...

Last fare date is thanksgiving

You don't get miles until you fly. Do you have any recourse with UA if they book in an economy class?
