I would not risk trying someone else's number. Even if you somehow get it to stick, you can get into trouble if they catch you using it for free bags - they can bill you (and possibly fine you as well), and if they're in a really bad mood, they can target your mileage account as punishment, as well as report to the airline of your friend's account that it's being used fraudulently, and get him shut down as well. (I know someone who somehow got someone else's number to work, then got caught - he got into huge trouble for it. I don't remember exactly what happened to him, but I remember he said it was totally not worth the free bags.)

I have an upcoming trip of 19,500 miles. If I credit them to aegean (plus 1,000 signup bonus) does that give me *G for the next 3 years? or do I first have to get 4,000 and then another 16,000

Does it take time to register or can I sign up today if I'm flying tomorrow?

Maybe call and ask for some...

In the end I recounted and it was only 18,200 miles so that wouldn't get me gold anyway, and when I checked, I only get 80% of the miles flown. So I just put it on my good old United account as I don't know when I'll be flying next on *A.
