Will This Purim Cause Another Frum Outbreak?
« on: February 25, 2021, 12:47:45 PM »
Last year Purim was THE breaking point for COVID in the frum community.

Everyone remembers reading the names everyday from Purim through Pesach...

My shul is doing a mass seudah, parties with food etc. Almost back to normal when you consider everyone eating and mingling at the same time.

Will this Purim bring on a new wave? Or it's already been back to normal for so long in NYC etc that it won't tip the scales at this point?

Are other communities seeing this Purim major lowering of community restrictions/standards held until now?

I think there will be an uptick in cases from Purim this year but there are major differences from last year:
1) A lot of high risk individuals either are already vaccinated or will stay away from large gatherings this Purim
2) A certain percentage (everyone can insert what they think that number is in their community) already got it
3) There are now treatments available for those that get it "seriously"
4) Hospitals are better equipped to deal with it (unlike last year)

That being said I will be having my Purim Seduah with just family and will just be giving Shalach Monas to a few neighbors.

It will cause spread, but not another outbreak.

In Lakewood, it appears that Purim will be even more toned down than everyday life. No weddings on one hand, and nearly every Yeshiva is making their own private “bubble” Mesiba on the other (so less mixing). Most Gevirim are not even in town.

It might lead to a increase for a short term. But the immunity that most people have + awareness that the vulnerable take precautions I don't see how it should lead to anything major unless there will be another varient that would make people that had it already get it again.

This doesnt really make sense to me as there have been plenty of jam packed weddings in lakewood just within the past week alone. Majority of shuls are open regular without any limits as well as having regular full fledged kiddeishim on a weekly basis. BMG has been open and packed shoulder to shoulder for over a half a year now. Why would they feel that they can't make a regular mesiba like they always do? Why would Purim be any more dangerous than the rest of the year?

Total lockdown > Some precautions > No precautions

Purim with no restrictions has greater potential for spread than everyday life with no restrictions. See: Purim 2020.

Do you know first hand of any expectant ladies in lakewoodd who are seriously ill with covid? If yes, why isn't there more awareness & talk about this?

Lakewood is running its second vax drive for pregnant women for this reason, IINM. And yes, there should be more awareness and publicity. Communication and awareness on all thing Covid-related has been... less than stellar.

The last thing they need is for the APP to show up. It is nisim geluyim that they haven't already.

I think that it is more because of the sensitivity of the issue, especially when addressing the Lakewood community. If you read between the lines, they specifically talk about pregnant women consulting their doctors about getting the vaccine, which I think would not belong on this release unless there was an increased emphasis on it.

I can't speak for others, but I took extra precautions.

My wife is in day 11 of Covid tomorrow, and most say she can go out safely. We were supposed to have a seuda with her siblings, at least one of which is pregnant. We pulled out (despite having a standing invitation) and we will iyH have a seuda ourselves this year.

There is no question there will be more cases as a result of Purim, the only question is how many.

In 7-14 days it will be mostly lower risk people. It's 10-20 days from now when those cases inevitably filter over to older and higher risk people that will be the problem.

There will almost definitely be more cases after Purim, but in places where many are already vaccinated it won't be anywhere near as bad.  One of the biggest problems last year was the issue of disbelief - it was still very new, and noone believed that it could get so out of hand.  Now people are more aware, and most are taking some sort of precautions.  Even in the groups that refuse to mask etc., many of them already had covid, so that immunity will factor in as well.

FTFY, anyone with half a brain, and saw what was happening in Italy knew that if there was one case in the frum community there would be 100,000 cases after Purim, the only question was if there was one case, now we know there was.
