Egyptair to fly to TLV?!
« on: March 04, 2021, 10:32:31 AM »
Looks like they just put in a request for 21 flights a week. That will open a lot more Star Alliance availability, if you are ok to travel through Cairo.

Good news, but selfishly I'm a little sad that I'll never get to fly Air Sinai.

Anyone have experience flying with them?

Flew with them many years ago, from Johannesburg, it has been common for those flying to Tel Aviv to use EgyptAir as it could be the most affordable.

They only started flying to TLV in the past year.

I think you’re confusing with Ethiopian.
Looking for reports for TLV-North America. They seem to have some good prices for the summer.

Absolutely not confusing EgyptAir with Ethiopian Airlines. The Cairo to TLV leg was operated by Air Sinai. It operated as a 'paper airline' for parent company Egyptair under a wet lease-like agreement to serve flights exclusively between Egypt and Israel.

It didn't show up on the online travel sites, except on travelstart.co.za, booking directly with travel agent, or via EgyptAir office. When I flew in 2013, JNB to Cairo was operated by brand new Airbus A330-300, while El Al was operating direct flights to TLV on their extremely ancient 767 fleet which they finally retired in 2019.

Wow! Didn't think you were from the lucky people who actually flew Air Sinai. Either way, considering the hoops you had to jump through to book, and the undercover status of it at the time, Its hard to call it "common".

From South Africa it was easily bookable. For tickets issued in Israel, one had to email their Hotmail email address to make a reservation and then pay by cash in their Tel Aviv office. They allowed two suitcases, and there were times I flew to Cairo and went to Israel by road via Taba / Eilat. Not to mention I flew in and had a day layover on the day of the coup on my return leg in 2013, although it was 100% normal in the airport.

The Air Sinai leg was always full with South African tourists visiting Israel.

I did a 24 hour stop in Cairo, but I saw many others on JFK-CAI who were connecting right away to TLV. What exactly is the question?

I have a EWR-CAI-VKO itn in C with 4 hours in CAI.  Any issues with davening in lounge etc.? (I’m not inconspicuous).

I would be more concerned that after arrival in VKO, you can be sent to Ukraine to become cannon fodder.

I transited CAI a few months ago. Airport is very old. There was a drop of confusion if a mobile BP works for transit, but otherwise no issues. TLV gate is remote and you will be separate from the rest of the airport.
