I'll be doing the Lakewood-Chicago drive for Pesach and am wondering if the Pennsylvania Turnpike warrants the $40 toll.

We did it last year, and the rest stops and gas stations sure were convenient, but am not sure it's worth it.

Does the 80 90 not have good services?
On the contrary, the pa turnpike could be pretty annoying to drive in some parts, with the twists and turns in some areas.

I've never done the 80. Found the PA Turnpike to be a pretty easy drive. Most of the turns could be done without slowing down too much.

80 is less curvy, a couple of big s bends, and that's mostly it. Make sure to stop at truck stops rather than the state rest areas even if you don't need gas. The rest stops are pretty bad.

What's the speed situation there? Speed limit is 70 on PA Turnpike, but can go 80 with no issues.

I've done both. If you are traveling with little kids that may need bathroom breaks, the turnpike is definitely better, and I usually take it despite the tolls. However, I would easily go with the 80 if I'm doing an overnight drive, when I'm not expecting to make too many stops.

I went last year right at the beginning of the COVID panic, and it was basically all trucks. They do stay on the right so not a big deal.

It can get really annoying when there are two lanes and the truck going 46 MPH is cutting off the truck that is going 45 MPH and the highway is clogged for 15 minutes while the truck inches its way around.

LOL. I try for minimal stops. Drive overnight straight with just two stops – Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Not in my experience. It's usually zero traffic when driving in the overnight hours.

Trip will be with a newborn, postpartum mother, and teenage helper. Hoping to do overnight, but will need to see. Expecting to need frequent stops.

Turnpike is also not great for those who need frequent stops, as there can be anywhere between 20 and 60 minutes between rest areas. I've had experiences when my kid will go "I need the bathroom emergency" right after passing a rest area and there is 60 miles to the next one.

But the actual experience of taking kids in and/or diapering them, or taking them to stretch their legs, I find better on the turnpike rest areas.
