What's The Craziest Shidduch Question You've Been Asked?
« on: March 08, 2021, 03:56:37 PM »
Inspired by this post:

... and while I met my wife through friends, I listened to some of my friends crazy shidduch stories and requests - my two favorites:

- Does he wear boxers or briefs?
- She needs to be a size 6, and read the NY Times and WSJ

Here are some insane ones that were asked of me or close family members:

- After blowing his nose, does he fold or crumple his tissue?
- Which animal would you compare the girl to?
- Does the family stack or scrape the Shabbos dishes?

I think people ask such questions to screen the person they're interviewing, not to find out about the shidduch candidate :D

Dude you wish

What do you mean? That's how I took such questions and answered accordingly. I once even got asked if I'm on the market in case the intended candidate doesn't work out (I said I wasn't because I'm not interested in someone who is interested in me because of THAT), so I guess it worked.

- After blowing his nose, does he fold or crumple his tissue?

To be fair, that is a better scenario than what crumple or fold is usually asked about.

Can we include things people have written in descriptions of what they are looking for? (we need a popcorn emoji)

A friend related a story that happened when his wife redt a local girl to a bachur from our yeshiva. The girl's father passed away  young and my friend's wife - I guess cognizant of the fact that it's often very hard on the almana, and potentially the girl as the oldest, or something like that - told the boy's mother that the girl is very respectful to her mother. This woman starts yelling at her, going off on a 10 minute rant: "How could you say such a thing?! It means the girl's mother is difficult! I had a difficult mother in law and I don't want my son to have to deal with that. Yadda yadda yadda." My friend said his wife was so upset, thinking she messed up the shidduch, and of course he told her, be happy, you saved this girl a potential nightmare.

Craziest is still when boys mother asked me for picture and said no to the girl based off that.  Still boggles my mind.

When I got engaged at a young age my "friend" asks me why I took someone that lost a parent, which I obviously answered that how is it her fault. Four years later he married someone that had lost a parent.

A little OT, but inspired by the post above:

I once redt a girl to a friend of mine who I thought was a perfect match. My father made the suggestion to the boy’s mother, and I waited to see what they thought. Imagine my surprise when the boy’s mother called back, deeply hurt that we thought so poorly of her son because of the “skeletons” in the girl’s family’s past. (I later learned from their son that because both of his parents are Baalei Teshuva, they are very sensitive to perceived insinuations that they are somehow less qualified than others.)

I called them the following day to inform them that I vehemently disagreed with them and only mentioned the name because I thought it was a great shidduch. Being somewhat impulsive, I wanted to find a way to show them that I redt the shidduch precisely because I thought so highly of their son.

Long story short, her name was Shevy.
