A word of instruction: I have given information countless times, and I consider myself a professional at highlighting people's positive attributes without lying. I can give precise information about what type of person the boy is, in the most positive light. For example, "Yes, he's a really serious learner, but he's the type who will be a good husband and make sure to be home for his wife during bain hasdarim," (read: not a major masmid), or "I was his chavrusah and he was always there before me" (please don't ask me what time I came...).
Now to the story:
I once got a call from someone seeking information about a friend of mine. During the course of the conversation, I mentioned that my friend, while he was a serious learner who learned the whole day, had a talent for computers, and he even gave a small computer course at night once a week.
The person who called me for the information started to lecture me that I should be careful what I say about people, because I could turn people off by providing such information!
