Something Fishy's First Trip to Israel - Planning Thread
« on: March 09, 2021, 09:11:25 PM »
I've had tickets booked four times over the last couple of years, but always had to cancel for this reason or that.

Maybe the fifth time's the charm... hopefully Israel will let us in. I've never done too much planning for an Israel trip, so I am quite literally starting from scratch here. Any and all feedback and tips would be appreciated. Cliché jokes about Niturei Karta or the Kosel shall be limited to DDFers with at least 1948 posts or likes (cannot be combined).

Here's the current itinerary:

Sunday: Depart JFK 11:45p, direct on DL.
Monday: Arrive TLV 5:35p.

........aaaaand that's all I've got.

Thinking of leaving the following Thursday, which brings me to my first specific question: are the midnight-ish flights a wise idea, or should I stick with the late morning ones? Departing later gives me essentially a full extra day in Israel, and still lands 15-16 hours before Shabbos (Friday 4 or 5am).

This is planned for smack in the middle of the summer. I know that it may not be the perfectly perfect Shavous or Sukkos weather, but it's what works.

What do we want to see and do? Everything, pretty much - it's our first time there. But we also don't want to run around like dead chickens for 10 days either, or change hotels every night or two. So we need to find that happy medium between the spiritual, historical, nature, adventure, family visits, relaxing, etc. etc. etc.

As far as hotels, we are absolutely not fans of large and/or fancy places. We're way happier off in an interesting Airbnb than a 5-star resort. We value uniqueness - and our budget - way more than aspirational (for some) properties. I have a bunch of Hotels.com free nights of varying value I'll be using, and will use rev for others. I'll consider using points or miles if it's a really good value - i.e. I'm probably not gonna bother with anything over 15k/nt.

So, for now - let's start with a very basic framework. Any good links to Israel 101? I think there was one on DDMS but it's been years. How many nights in which region? What are the must-dos? Do I even need a car? Anything cool way off the beaten path? What food is not to be missed?

Starting from zero is honestly an extremely weird sensation for someone who plans trips for a living, but Israel is just something I've never had to plan before. With so many people having mountains of experience on the subject here, I thought I'll sit back and benefit from others' experiences for a change ;).

Definitely take the redeye home.

Is 10 days a hard limit? Can't spend another Shabbos in the holy land?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Masada at sunrise
+1, plus you can get in ein gedi and yam hamelach on the same day.
No reason to go to Eilat unless your dying to go scuba diving but waay overrated.
Mitzpe rimon is a stunning place.

Plus tons more places of course

Maarot Netifim near Bet Shemesh (small 30 minute excursion, but worth it).

Consider a night or more at a Field School or kibbutz or moshav, instead of a hotel.

The Blind museum in Cholon. Must book in advance online. If you end up with a good group, it's amazing.

There are a lot of kevarim to choose from.

Indeed, gonna have to narrow those down eventually.

Masada at sunrise

In the summer as well?

Mitzpe rimon is a stunning place.

So all those can be done in a day or is is better to overnight in the area or something?

And yeah, not gonna waste time in Israel for underwhelming scuba.

Not 100% yet, but that's the most likely scenario so I'm working off that.

One day is enough. Especially long summer days. Will also be too hot to do too much hiking anyways, so to get the views it is for sure enough.

When you go up north do Rosh Hanikra.

Never heard of that, and Google is not being very helpful.

Is it this?

Love these, definitely sound like off-the beaten path things. Will look into all of them.

Birding is definitely something I can spend a week doing, but not sure my wife will be too interested. I'll look into the details and take it from there.

When you pass by Akko when you go up north, stop in the shul with all the murals. The name escaped me just this second.

ETA: It's the Tunisian Shul. Go Mincha Maariv time. It's for sure open then.
