Yup, supposedly solid top guitars sound better with age.
I don't believe it's limited to the top guitars I believe it's a physical attribute of the wood.

"Solid" top, as opposed to laminate wood tops - in other words, the top of the guitar is a single piece of wood, rather than layered.

Not that I'm saying I can hear the difference myself.

take the boy to guitar store and try a few. fret sizes can make a difference. make sure its comfortable. and a decent one that will stay in tune. should be in the $100 range.

Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Best is if you can get it from an individual selling it, especially someone who tried to learn, didn't, and just wants to get rid of it. But you want to check it out with someone who knows at least a drop about guitars, so you can make sure there are no glaring issues.

I'm looking for a cheap guitar for a beginner. I don't have the slightest clue what makes a guitar good or bad.

It's going to be for a 14 year old

Any ideas?
And if your next question is where to get him lessions or where to watch to learn how to play keep me in the loop.

Always wanted to learn how to play,. But of course that never happened with 1OO0 other things!  :)
Loved striking the strings and singing but had no clue which and what to hold and pull on.

if you can learn the basic 4-5 chords you can pick up a good portion of Jewish music out there.

Don't know much about ukelele's, I think they're supposed to be easier than guitars?

Learn 8 basic chords and you can play thousands upon thousands of songs, jewish and non-jewish. The great thing about guitar is that once you learn how to play on a basic level, it doesn't sound basic. It sounds like you're just...playing songs.

PM me if you want to discuss.

Ukelele's are easier, but I'd say it's more of unique style.

With no actual knowledge, I'd guess it's probably also easier to find guitar chords online for any given song.
