Guitar for beginners
« on: March 10, 2021, 09:20:25 PM »
I'm looking for a cheap guitar for a beginner. I don't have the slightest clue what makes a guitar good or bad.

It's going to be for a 14 year old

Any ideas?

Yamaha F335, price about $160

This one has been recommended to me as a solid guitar with "the sound of a $500 guitar." It is not specifically a "beginner guitar" but it was easy to use by one beginner I know, though it was an adult.

There are many guitars that are substantially cheaper, in the $30-$50 range, but the above one is a solid piece.

What are the differences between those and more expensive ones

the way it’s built, type of wood etc. if you had an even a fair ear for music you could hear the difference between a 50$ guitar and a 150 and 500 guitar. In my opinion you might as well get a fairly guitar that way ur kid wont ask to upgrade and you’ll end up w one 75$ guitar and one 175$ guitar  .
Go for 150 and it’s a very nice sounding guitar

Keep in mind there are other factors in addition to sound.

Some of the very cheap guitars will never properly tune. No matter how hard you try, no matter how many times you do it, it won't stay tuned for that long. So, they may be good for beginner but as they go on they will probably want a new one.

Buying a new guitar for $50 or less is not going to give you an instrument that will be enjoyable to play. It will likely not stay in tune, and it may have intonation problems, so your chords will sound all wrong, too.

Spending in the $100-150 (or 160) range for a decent new guitar will get you something enjoyable that will also last.

The F335 mentioned above is a worthwhile option.

Another way to go is buying a used guitar, where you can get the same level guitar for under $100.

But new guitar for $50? I beg you not to.

Even for a beginner - it's hard to enjoy an instrument if it's difficult/impossible to play music on it.

I would assume that many 14-year-olds will turn their nose up at the thought of a used guitar.

They say a used guitar actually sounds better.

Yup, supposedly solid top guitars sound better with age.

I would assume that many 14-year-olds will turn their nose up at the thought of a used guitar.

Dunno...you might be able to explain that it allows you to get a better quality guitar.
