Someone told me recently that Chabad chassidim will never name their children "Avigdor" because there was a misnaged by that name who snitched on the Baal Hatanya.Anyone know of a website that expounds on this, especially about giving the name Avigdor in today's days?
it's good to be a Lubavitcher
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/19_KislevI've never heard of any kind of minhag not to name Avigdor, but suffice it to say that is who I think of every time I hear the name, so I wouldn't do it myself. If there are generations like me, then there wouldn't be many Avigdor's to name children after in Lubavitch circles. I'm having trouble thinking of a Lubavitcher named Avigdor.

Wow that means that there is an unofficial minhag not to give that name, interesting.
How did you get that from what @Yehuda57 is saying, all I got was 1) that's who he would associate the name with, (assumingly) being that he doesn't know anyone else with the name. 2) he just happens to not know anyone chabad with that name. 3) there is enough family names that would be given to a new kid, he wouldn't start giving other names.
Same. Never heard it was a custom, but also never heard of any Lubavitchers with that name.
I have heard that with the same Shmuel even though that was the Maharash's name. I don't know if that is true but I know a lot of Chabadtzkers called MM, LY, SDB, SZ or YY but none called Shmuel.
Uh. Fake news.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shmuel_Schneersohn
Still fake news. I know a ton of Lubavitcher Shmuels.
Is it the least used name of all the Rebbes?
How many Lubavitchers do you know named Yekusiel?
